Miami is known for being party central, and home to numerous big named DJ’s. In the small chic town of perfect weather and beautiful people, there has been a storm brewing and causing a stir.
His name DJ ROXX. He has created a huge name for himself by keeping the club goers glued to the dance floor. With flawless sets, continuous beats, and surprising tricks up his sleeves. His knowledge of music extends to his youth. Absorbing everything, he has created his own sound that has everyone in the country talking about him. Working with some great promoters and his skills in booth, have proved to be a perfect union for Roxx.
MetroVelvet had the opportunity to steal Roxx away from his turntables. In order to get to know a little more about him and his rise in the music scene, and this is only the beginning for him, Roxx is the DJ to watch out for.
MV: What sparked you to become a DJ? What age did you start?
ROXX: I’m originally from Brazil, where my mother was actually a club promoter. So I grew up around vinyls and DJ’s around the house or in general, the club scene. When I moved to New York, it seemed to come together while hanging out at Twilo and listening to Junior Vasquez. He played the most amazing music I had ever heard and then I decided to become a DJ.
MV: Do you remember your first gig?
ROXX: Oh yes, I do. It was at an after hour club in Miami called Cactus. At that time, I was only playing my vast collection of vinyls.
MV: You’ve made a major name for yourself, was it a hard climb to get where you are now?
ROXX
: Yes, it has been a road with a many twists and turns! I was like many others yearning to pursue a goal. After all, I started from scratch just like many of my peers. I had a knack for mixing. Together with being a particular sort of club kid, but I was very determined to achieve my goal - even in a place that is ridden with 24/7 parties and social happenings. In the end this aids in creating a high standard. It may appear like fun and games come Showtime, but there are hours and hours of hunting, listening, editing, sorting and preparation for each and every gig! I treat it as I do with everything I set out to do-with rigor and dedication!
MV
: You’ve been spinning at Discotekka & Click at DEK23. The two being highly successful parties. How has the success been for you?
ROXX: Amazing! I couldn’t have been more happy to obtain my residency at Click Sundays at Dek23. In no time at all the entire team involved, we put forth such an effort that results in a great soundtrack. To play my musical soundtrack for an event like this and with a successful team, what more can I or anybody else ask for? It’s a feeling like no other to be a part of a team like this. It’s a family. At Click, the family has gay tendencies in conjunction with everyday club culture. At Discotekka, we are hetero driven with afterhours so get ready. Everything goes and usually does!
MV: What can one expect when you’re behind the turntables?
ROXX: A burst of high energy with planned, yet seemingly unexpected surprises. All this is done through sound, which I manipulate in the booth and in prior editing for the greatest effect.
MV: Your sets are insanely full of energy. You truly play for your crowd. How do you prep for your sets?
ROXX: Generally speaking I don’t usually prepare the set. Other than selecting an opening track, but I do prepare my music. I am constantly editing things or doing my own mixing in a way that I don’t compromise my sound. The rest I mostly read the crowd and see how the people respond to my music. I build over the course of the night.
MV: Tell me about one of the best nights you’ve had while playing?
ROXX
: Um… let me think about it. It’s hard for me to single out just one night though in general. A great night for me is when security has to come and tell me to stop the music because the club’s closed and yet the dance floor’s still packed.
MV: What’s your favorite track of all time? Is there one you must always play?
ROXX: One track? Hmm, It’s really hard for me to choose “just” one. Though, I usually have a favorite for the week.
MV: What DJ’s do you love to hear spin?
ROXX download The Long Riders movie : My top 3 favorites ones are Danny Tenaglia, Loco dice, Mistress Barbara.
MV: Is there anyone you’d like to collaborate with?
ROXX: Yes, I have kind of a few on my list, but in my top list is Peter Rauhofer. I really love his production and his ability to cater to different kind of audiences.
MV: You produce & remix, and recently mixed Click Volume 1. What else do you have in the works?
ROXX: I have been creating, mixing and experimenting new sounds for my own compilation, this time with more of my own production, which is more fun and real.
MV: Do you think there is a big difference between the house music scene in Miami than in New York?
ROXX: Yes, Miami house music is more main stream where New York house music is more underground.
MV: When is New York going to have the pleasure of you serving us on the dance floor again? NY has a lot of love for DJ ROXX.
ROXX:Thank you. I have some projects in the works already and hopefully soon because I love the New York energy!
MV: What’s next for you?
ROXX: Right now I am very focused on my own production from keyboards to mixing. I really want to get my music heard worldwide and more touring around the country.

This isn’t the last you’ve heard of DJ Roxx. He is just getting started and from the looks of it he is going to have much longevity in the music scene. He’s now producing his own music and the world is getting ready for his wrath. The House Music scene is always lucky when a great music maker comes along that is real and true to his craft.
