Maison Gaultier opened the doors to a whole undiscovered world of Jean Paul Gaultier. The French Couture House, remarked and know to be one of the most daring and controversial maisons from the decade. Nathalie Bondil, Thierry-Maxime Loriot, Denis Marleau & Stephanie Jazmin, and the designer Jean Paul Gaultier, conform the team that worked for nearly 2 years to make this project possible. Considered to be one of the very few collaborations from which the designer didn’t provide any monetary help, has yet to be one of the most historic fashion exhibits that will travel the world.
The first exhibition to be entirely devoted to the French Couturier, mixes fashion with technology to bring to life -literally- some of the most talked about designs by Jean Paul Gaultier over the years. The display mounts a timeline between the dream, the odyssey and the reality of Jean Paul Gaultier. Crossing through the boudoir, skin deep, punk cancan, urban jungle and metropolis; known to be recognized phases of the designer where he stablished the new creations of the era and guidelines for the garments of the future.
Inspired by the simple oblivious,Jean Paul Gaultier played with the femininity of women and the manliness of men for years, coming out with breathtaking polemic pieces that had become iconic figures of criteria where new designers find their inspiration.

This first international exhibition will showcase pieces from the more than 150 collections Jean Paul Gaultier has made since year 1976. The exhibition was initiated, developed, produced and circulated by the JThe Montreal Museum of Fine Arts to mark the thirty-fifth anniversary of Jean Paul Gaultier’s namesake label. With more than 140 ensembles and numerous documents, this innovative presentation with a theatrical mise en scene and multimedia approach, makes this exhibition a must seen.
Dubbed fashion’s “enfant terrible” by the press, was self taught through television and after working with Pierre Cardin, the rise of this Couturier hasn’t stopped.
The exhibition will tour Dallas, San Francisco, Madrid and the Netherlands.
The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk is presented by the Musée des Beaux-Arts Montréal MMFA in collaboration with Maison Jean Paul Gaultier and curated by Nathalie Bondil. Research and book by Thierry-Maxime Loriot.
