Yes, she’s still alive!! And no she is not going anywhere, honey.
Thankfully! For those of you youngsters who don’t know, before RuPaul, before Devine, there was the original Superstar.
One Holly Woodlawn. She was part of a trio of original transgender superstars Holly, Candy Darling, and Jackie Curtis, that made up part of iconic pop artist Andy Warhol’s posse back in the late 60’s and 70’s.
And was also the star of two of his movies out on DVD now, Trash, where she received rave reviews, and Women in Revolt, where she starred along side her two partners in crime Candy and Jackie.
You can also catch a glimpe of her in Madonna’s Deeper and Deeper video. Today the 61 year old Puerto Rican born actress resides in West Hollywood and has left her wild past behind.
Having been inmortilized in Lou Reed’s classic Walk on the Wild Side she now enjoys the quiet and the simple things in life. The film rights to her book A Low Life in High Heels about her life story as the original tranny party gurl and Warhol Superstar have been sold and starts shooting this coming spring.
You can check her brand new web site WoodlawnSuperstar.com to find out more about her latest doings. La Woodlawn is a true survivor in this crazy world of sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll and if you don’t believe me read her book before the movie comes out to get a glimpse of a legendary transgender superstar of yesteryear and today.
SUPERSTAR, SURVIVOR, LEGENDARY… that’s Holly Woodlawn, the mother of all trannies!

Samara: So, I understand your first language was Spanish, correct?

Holly: Yeah, I was born in Puerto Rico.

Samara: Have you lost the language? Or do you still remember your Spanish?

Holly: Are you kidding? Mira mi amor. No me preguntes esa palabra porque no, no, no. I’m very proud of being Puerto Rican. I’m extremely proud of being born in Puerto Rico. Because a lot of people just go, “oh you know?” I don’t want to mention any names but she lives in London and all of a sudden she’s got this British accent. It starts with an M. Need I say more? Oh no because I just got back from London a couple of months ago.
I was there the end of September for a week with my friend Constance. There was an art exhibit, paintings about me. So, I went with my girlfriend and we did the public shows. It went well. All they talked about was how Madonna all of a sudden became lady… I go, “oh my God.” No but back to the question yes I am very proud of where I come from. I’m Puerto Rican and I will die a Puerto Rican.

Samara : What was your first paying job?

Holly : Legally, or illegally?

Samara : Let’s go for illegally.

Holly : Illegally? Well, when I first went to New York I was fifteen years old and I was hungry and starving. You know like every other kid. I had to… You know my first paying job wad hooking. I think I got twenty bucks from some dirty old man. But you know what? I ate. It kept me warm you know. I mean there’s somethings you do when you’re young. When you’re young it doesn’t mean anything. But that was my first paying job. (laughs) Now those days are over. I don’t do that stuff nomore. I mean hopefully I got wiser with age. But when you’re young there are things that you do because you have to do it because you have to protect yourself. You know. That’s what I did.

Samara: Do you miss Miami or NYC?

Holly: To be perfectly honest with you I do not miss Miami. (laughs) Well, you’ve lived there so you know. It’s hot and its humid and I lived there when I was a kid. I went to high school there you know and urgh… No, I don’t miss Miami, I love Miami. But when I was there that week ( at Bob Risse’s house) that was fun. But if I had to live there, forget it. And as far as New York is concerned I went through it and I was there during the 60’s, 70’s, the 80’s when New York was at it’s height and now… I feel like you know when the Olympics and you have the torch. Well, honey I’m passing the torch to you.
You know now it’s your turn honey. I did my job now it’s up to you. So, you know what I’m talking about honey. Now you run around the block and you carry the torch. I did it for twenty years now it’s your turn. No, but of course I love New York don’t be silly. I miss it. I miss my friends there but the thing is when I go to New York if I fly: first class and if I stay somewhere: you know, no more dumps for me. In other words. If you know what I mean. Oh, I did that when I was twenty honey, I’m done. I’m not gonna go that route anymore.

Samara: So, what’s a typical day for you now?

Holly: Seriously, this is a typical day. I do take milk baths because I had to use ah… powdered milk. So, I poured two. People are not going to believe this but this is true. I take a milk bath, well of course I have breakfast. Like eggs, something silly and oatmeal. And I take my milk bath and I pour with bubbles and everybody in the neighborhood knows that I live here cause they can smell me cause I live close to the street.
Then I check in with my boyfriend who works for Disney. “Hello honey, I’m alive.” He got me a painting set for Christmas so I’ve been painting. Cause I have a little cat that I just got so now I have responsibilities. This little grey, gorgeous beautiful. She’s I think Russian, they call it Russian blue. It’s like this silver grey big sack ball with these yellow eyes. It’s like, “meow, meow.” It’s like, “oh please honey.” No, that doesn’t work with me. Then I watch The Prodigal which I’m into this week with Lana Turner. You know which is an MGM temple movie. You know with high priestess’ and human sacrifices. Of course the human sacrifice is a big muscle man. Yeah you know a simple day in West Hollywood with Holly.

Samara: What advice do you have for all those young people today?

Holly: Basically my only advice is if you have a goal go forward and don’t look back. If you know that you’re good believe in yourself and just trust your soul honey, I did it. And for some reason people think I’m dead. I have no intentions of dying. I have no idea. I think I’m going to be one of those few that can live on forever. But when I was a kid, when I went to New York everyone would say, “well Holly you can’t do this, you can’t, you can’t, you can’t.” I said, “fuck you!” I hate when people say you can’t do this. Because when they say that, I’m going to do it. And prove them wrong. That’s basically my message. Don’t let anyone get in your way. Don’t let anyone stop you.

Samara: What things would you have done differently in your younger days?

Holly: The only thing I would have done differently is… nothing, actually. Seriouly. If someone came up to me and said, “Holly you’re going to have to go through this fucken hell one more time, you wanna change something?” And you know what I would say? “no!” Of course now it’s a different thing, there’s an option. OK, if I get to be eighteen again.
Can I still be as wise as I am now? Then I would do it. You know. And being where I am, if I didn’t suffer or go through all those hurdles that you do go through as part of life then you’re not going to be who you are. You are not going to grow up. No, no I don’t think I would’ve changed anything.

Samara: Do you ever feel guilt that you are the only survivor of your trio of Superstar gurls?

Holly: You know it’s funny you should say guilty. No, I don’t feel gulity. You know what I feel? Lonely. Because here I am, and they’re not here. So I can’t call Jackie or Candy and go, “oh, guess what!?” You know like we used to do when we were you know gurlfriends. I can’t call them up. So no it’s not guilty, I feel lonely. Of course I miss Candy and Jackie very much.

Samara: How was it back then for gurls taking hormones?

Holly: It was very hard because you know no one understood us. No one got it. Well the thing is if you took female hormones you had to look like a woman that means you had to pass. Basically Candy and I lucked out because we looked like women. With Jackie Curtis didn’t. Sometimes we took hormones and all this stuff. I just stopped because… Everyone was saying, “Holly you have to be a woman because you’re so beautiful.” The same thing with Candy. But she took them seriously and I went, “you know what, I don’t like this crap.” I’m not getting hard-ons. My sex life is… I’m scorpio honey, I’m from Puerto Rico and sex to me is like… forget it. If that is out of my life, I will kill myself. And with hormones… There goes… so I stopped hormones. But hey listen I don’t think you need any of that stuff.
And I think basically it all comes from the soul who you are inside. Because it’s 2008 and you know… How can I say this? It’s something inside, your inner glow. And from your inner glow and if you’re positive about yourself and who you are and what you are believe me they’re going to love you. Because I’ve been going through this for like forty years now. I just would not stop. You know I say, “Well if they don’t like me the way I am well then fuck them.” Basically.

Samara : Do you keep up with the drag/trans superstars of today?

Holly : I’m sorry but I really don’t. Because lately I feel, believe it or not, I live a very quiet life with my boyfriend and a cat. It’s like Holly Woodlawn has gone… basically I do want to be alone. My temple is my temple and no one dares come into this temple. I’m extremely happy with my boyfriend, and my cat, and my friends. And working. Oh, and by the way I have a new web site I just opened it! It’s called WoodlawnSuperstar.com. Yeah so whenever you wanna get a hold of me, email whatever. So, my friend and I are putting it together. But it’s officially WoodlawnSuperstar.com

Samara : Can you update us on your movie project for A Low Life in High Heels?

Holly : Oh, as a matter of fact I just sold the rights to A Low Life in High Heels about two weeks ago. Now I can tell the world that I sold the rights. And Adriano Serafini who is producing it will probably start production in the spring. But in the mean time I’m going to be… myself through America and Europe. I’m also thinking of recording. I’m thinking of everything. I’m thinking of a future now. God gave me a second chance at life and I’m gonna use it.

Samara: And tell us about the soundtrack?

Holly: Well I really don’t know about the soundtrack. I do know that Lou Reed is involved obviously. He has to be. You know because Walk on the Wild Side. But that’s all I know so far.

Samara: So, how was it that you got imortilized in the classic Take a Walk on the Wild Side?

Holly: To be perfectly honest with you I don’t know. Lou [Reed] told me that when he was writing the song about the Warhol superstars, Jackie, Candy, and Joe Dallesandro and I… cause I hadn’t met him yet. I had done an interview stating that I came from Miami and I hitched hiked and all that stuff. And that’s how he wrote the song. And then when the song came out and it became a hit I called him up and said, “thank you, that’s wonderful but how did you know this?” He said, “because Holly you have the biggest mouth in the world, you can’t shut up.” And yeah parting words. But yeah Lou and I now were just very close, the best of friends. But yeah, that’s how we met.

Samara : Are you over seeking fame?

Holly : Oh completely. No, the only word in my dictionary is ahh, and put this in capitol letters C A S H!!! and three exclamation points. Otherwise I’m not budging. Otherwise I rather be at home with my boyfriend and my cat. Because my boyfriend has a beautiful little cottage in Glendale with roses and stuff so why should I give that up. Do I have a dressing room? Yeah, it’s called a toilet. Honey I did that when I was twenty I don’t want to do it again, not when I’m sixty. By the way I’m very proud of being sixty-one. Yeah, I turned sixty-one in October.
Honey, wait, oh wait. Believe me it’s so much fun. It’s not easy and no one said it was going to be easy. But let me tell you. One day you wake up and you go, “you know what it’s wonderful.” People think… I thought, when I was like fifteen I thought at twenty-one I was gonna kill myself and be found looking luscious in bed with flowers and you know. And then when twenty-five came around and thirty and then forty came and then fifty and all of a sudden I’m sixty and you know I found a boyfriend and I… who’d known. Basically what I’m saying is don’t give up sit around and wait. Cause you never know what’s gonna come your way. And it may be wonderful.
Photobucket
Samara : Back in the day did you meet any celebrities that were real bitches?

Holly : Oh, gosh. I never hung around celebrities that were bitches. If they were I would leave the room. I knew a lot of those people but the thing is I had no time for this crap. But no I would never stay in the same room with a “bitch.” But I’ll tell you about celebrities that were not bitches that were fabulous. Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison.

Samara: What women inspired you to be womanly?

Holly: Oh honey please, you want the list? Ok, when I was like about five, six my uncle in Puerto Rico would take me to the movies to go see Lola Flores. And she was a famous Spanish star and she had the flamenco with the castinets and the whole thing. Ok, that was number one. Then when I moved to America my mother took me to go see The Prodigal with Lana Turner. Number two.
Then when I was sixteen I saw Cloepatra with Elizabeth Taylor. Number three. So now you know where I’m coming from. But basically MGM productions. You know women looking fabulous in color. Like high priestesses you know men would come and bow to them and give them jewels. And then you go, “ahh, OK I think I’ll see you today.” (laughs) That kind of crap.

Samara: Are you happy now?

Holly: Honey, I am very happy, yeah. Yeah, I am. I think I’m finally happy. I don’t know if happy is the word, I think I’m content. I mean everything is just like working smoothly and I like it. I like it a lot. Finally I’m enjoying being Holly Woodlawn. It took a long time let me tell you honey. (laughs)

Samara : So you do believe people can be happy in this lifetime?

Holly : Are you kidding? Yeah, but the thing is you’re gonna have to work for it. That’s what I was telling you before. Just don’t give up so early. And you never know. Here I am at this age and I’m happier.

Samara : What kind of health problems do you have now?

Holly : Are you kidding honey please. I mean first of all my stomach is made of cast iron. My doctor when I got my check up before I went to London, he said, “Holly your fucken bionic.” You know because they took blood out of me and I was like urgh. I walked out of there like blah! And he said, “you’re amazing, you should have been dead thirty years ago.” That’s what they… you know, but I have news for them. No, I’m in perfect health. You know my only problem is my spine, that’s what happends when you get older, I have trouble walking. But otherwise. Health problems? Are you kidding? Please.

Samara : Do you believe in reincarnation?

Holly : I used to but you know what? I’m starting to doubt myself. Because I seriously do not want to come back. Not the way this life is going. But as apposed to reincarnation I do believe that… how can I say this? That you don’t really die when you die. You know your soul and your power or whatever it just… because I mean sometimes I go to bed and I talk to my grandmother. And she’s been dead since 1965.
But I talk to her like she’s in the room but I’m not fooling myself you know. But whenever I’m in doubt of myself I’m just like, “grandma?” It’s like talking to a psychiatrist without paying. But a psychiatrist that loves you. So I do talk to dead people. I know they’re dead. Don’t get me wrong. I don’t see ghosts walking around my apartment. I’m not on acid or drugs. No but every once in a while like whenever I’m sort of lonely I just sort of make believe they’re here. In a way I do kind of believe in reincarnation… not reincarnation but I just believe that your spirit, that’s what I’m trying to say, your spirit goes on forever. And if you have a very light wonderful spirit it will stay there. So that’s what I bring in whenever I talk to my grandmother. High spirits.

Samara : And lastly, was it all worth it Holly?

Holly : Are you kidding? Of course it was. And I would do it again, and again. Speaking of reincarnation, and again, and again. Except I hope by the last lifetime it’s not that hard. Please ( laughs ) give me a break. I think I payed enough dues. You know what I mean? I mean how many times do I have to go through this crap. But yeah like I told you before I’m very happy, I am… considering.
That’s why I told you honey, don’t give up, keep going. It’s not going to be easy. No one ever said it’s gonna be fucken easy. It’s gonna be very hard but if you believe in who you are and what you are believe me you’re gonna get there honey. I did it and it was not easy. But when you asked me, “would you do it again?” I thought about that very hard and I said, “yeah but do I really have to go through all this crap again.” No, come on can I just slide in easily this time.

Samara: Anything else you wanna say to your fans?

Holly: There’s only one thing I have to say it’s you know what I’ve been saying all along honey just believe in yourself honey and I’ll be behind you one million percent, always. Love Holly! I mean it. You know I do. You know I can’t lie. I mean I don’t want you to suffer. I would never want you to suffer or go through what I went through.

Samara: Thank you so much Holly and I love you.

Holly: Alright sweetheart. It was a pleasure, it really is.
